Traphang Ngoen (ตระพังเงิน - Pronounced: Tra-pang Ngern)
As with Traphang Thong to the east, the partially dry rectangular area Traphang Ngoen - situated immediately south of Wat Sa Si and Traphang Trakuan (or Tra Kuan) - utilises a Thai transliteration of the Khmer word trapaeng - pond or reservoir. However, unlike the larger site, both ngoen (เงิน) and thong (ทอง) are Thai words. (Meaning silver and gold). While Sa Si was reportedly (this is admittedly somewhat anecdotal) built on a site already known by a Khmer name, it would appear that in the case of the 2 smaller sites a Thai title was merely added to the locally employed loan word for reservoir.
In so far as the colloquial Thai term nong was generally used for reservoirs and ponds, it is plausible that the use of a loan word implies an earlier date. This is, once again, speculative.
While both - or neither - sites could conceivably predate the Sukhothai period we've provisionally listed Traphang Ngoen, for location and alignment reasons, and excluded the site of Traphang Thong as well as the similarly Trapang Thong Lang, (situated east of the old city).
Traphang Ngoen measures some 130m x 260m, is aligned ENE-WSW and forms part of a small complex of reservoirs sharing a similar orientation to Traphang Trakuan as well as several smaller ponds to its immediate south. A small, Sukhothai-period shrine sits on an artificial island in the centre of the now partially dry pond.
