Sra Ta Phrom (สระตาพรหม- Pronounced: Sa Ta Prom)
The name alone is guaranteed to get Khmer history amateurs excited, however, note firstly that Sa is a Thai cognate of the Khmer sra (reservoir) while Ta (grandfather/ancestor) and Prohm (Brahma), exist in both Khmer and Thai languages. Secondly, the name of the celebrated Angkor Temple, Prasat Ta Prohm (Siem Reap), is of course a colloquial title given in more recent times and not the original name of the temple. The coincidence is nonetheless intriguing.
Sa Ta Phrom village is located in the far south of the province where a position astride what is now Highway #1 - and which was certainly an important route linking Nakhon Sawan with Tak since early times - does increase the site's archaeological credentials. (The Ping lies some 10kms to the east.) The provincial survey of archaeological sites (see external link) identifies an earthen embankment, reservoir and extensive brick vestiges corresponding to a small settlement. Unearthed artefacts including Buddha images have been dated to the late Lopburi, or Khmer, period.
The site is also indexed by CISARK although unfortunately, their coordinates are too approximative to be able to discern either the precise location or the extent of the settlement and nor are we able to locate the sa (or sra) in question. The aforementioned brick fragments originate from a tuol, known locally as Noen Sala, although again we don't have exact coordinates.
